Half-round gutters, part by part
A half-round gutter is a seamless trough formed as half a circle, with a rolled bead along its front edge, carried on hangers or brackets and drained through round downspouts.
Materials
Copper is the classic; aluminum does the daily work
Both form into the same seamless half-round. The difference is how each one looks after a decade on the house.
Aluminum
Painted aluminum half-round does the same job as copper for considerably less, in baked-on colors that suit period trim, including browns and black.
Copper
The traditional half-round metal. Joints are soldered, nothing is painted to peel, and the color deepens from new-penny bright to brown and, over many seasons, green.
Steel
Stiffer than aluminum but reliant on its coating. On an older house near salt water, ask at your estimate before choosing it over copper or aluminum.

Historic homes
Why half-round belongs on older architecture
Many houses built before the middle of the last century were drained by half-round, and the eye notices when it is swapped for something else. On a Victorian porch or a Federal brick front, the round trough and round downspouts are part of the design.
In Savannah, downtown earned National Historic Landmark status in 1966, and the Victorian District, the city's first streetcar suburb, went up mostly between 1870 and 1910. Downtown, the Historic District Board of Review oversees exterior changes.
So the first step is recording what the house has now: profile, width, metal, color and hangers, written down for owners of historic Savannah homes to share with the city. Smaller towns review changes too. In Darien’s historic districts, changing an exterior feature needs design review and a Certificate of Appropriateness (ordinary maintenance does not), so owners of historic homes in Darien should ask City Hall first. Blackshear has a preservation ordinance of its own, so owners of older houses in Blackshear should check with the city too.

Photos and measurements of the existing profile, width, metal, color, hangers and downspouts, including any original leader heads.

If the house sits in a district with design review, you confirm what is allowed before anything is ordered. Our written specification describes the work in plain terms.

Repair the wood
Fascia boards on older homes are often soft where the old gutter leaked. Rotten boards are repaired or replaced before a hanger goes near them.

Form, hang and test
The half-round is formed on site in one length per straight run, hung and pitched to round outlets, then flushed with water before we leave.

(912) 202-0537They can be. Half-round suits cottages, farmhouses, Craftsman bungalows and newer homes built in a traditional style. The deciding points are capacity and proportion: a very large or steep roof may need a wider half-round, and a wide trough can look heavy on a small elevation.

Usually less for fine grit and about the same for leaves. The smooth curve keeps silt moving toward the outlet, but a mat of wet pine straw blocks any trough. Where trees overhang the roof, a guard is still worth discussing at the estimate.
Sometimes. A bracket can be reused if it is sound, fits the width of the new trough and is a compatible metal; copper parts should only go back on copper.

Yes. With a copper trough, the downspouts, hangers and fasteners should be copper or a compatible metal, so no aluminum or galvanized part touches it. With painted aluminum half-round, round aluminum downspouts in the same color are the match.
Ask before you change it. Downtown, exterior work can need a Certificate of Appropriateness from the review board, and a December 2024 staff decision there reviewed even an in-kind replacement of copper leader heads and downspouts. A change of profile is a bigger step than that.
