Downtown sits near 250 feet, some of the highest ground in the county, and Georgia Trend named it one of eight “Renaissance Cities.” In town, much of the work is on rentals and older houses whose original gutters may be a size too small for the roof.
On November 7, 2024, flash flooding put water inside homes on Hodges Circle, West Jones Avenue and Turkey Trail. Where water already reaches the door, a downspout emptying at the wall makes it worse.
About nine miles east on US 80, with the county’s NOAA climate station just west of town: 46.98 inches of rain in a normal year, and 9.73 inches from Debby alone in 2024. That is the storm a replacement gets sized for.
A town of about 640, northwest of Statesboro. Idalia washed out dirt roads across northern Bulloch in 2023, so on country lots we send downspout water where it cannot cut a channel.
Named for pioneer Frank Register, with about 160 residents southwest of Statesboro. During Idalia a pond near town spilled across Kennedy Bridge Road, so discharge here heads away from the low spots that fill first.
The February 9, 2017 tornado started near Stilson–Leefield Road with winds near 130 mph and destroyed mobile homes before crossing into Effingham. Out here, re-hung runs go into sound fascia at close hanger spacing.
A soil series is named for Leefield: somewhat poorly drained ground under slash, longleaf and loblolly pine, with some sweetgum. Needles plus sweetgum balls call for micro-mesh guards; the wet ground calls for surface discharge.
Debby put two to three feet of water into homes and boathouses on Lake Cypress, and homes near Mill Creek were evacuated. Gutters cannot hold back a lake, but they decide whether the roof adds to it.
Bulloch’s rain comes in bursts. A normal year at Brooklet brings 46.98 inches, about 44% of it from June through September, with August the wettest month. Then come the storms: Debby dropped 12.10 inches at a station north of Statesboro in 2024, and Idalia brought 6 to 10 inches the summer before.
Many older houses and rentals carry a 5-inch trough with 2x3-inch downspouts, a common builder size. If yours runs over the front edge in a hard rain with nothing in it, cleaning will not fix it; the roof sheds more than that system can carry.
When Gutter Solutions LLC replaces a system here, each run is sized from the roof area and pitch that drain into it: usually a 6-inch seamless trough, 7- or 8-inch on big or steep planes, extra outlets on long runs and 3x4-inch downspouts where the flow needs them.
Statesboro is a renters’ city: Census estimates put owner-occupied homes at just 22.1% of its housing, and single-family detached houses at 35.5%. On a rental, gutter trouble tends to go unreported until it is expensive.

Bulloch’s soils split almost down the middle. USDA surveys class 38.8% of the county as well drained, mostly sandy uplands in the Tifton, Fuquay and Lakeland series. Nearly 30% is poorly drained, much of it Pelham soil, where the water table can sit anywhere from a foot above the surface to a foot and a half below.
On the sandy uplands, a buried downspout line ending in a pop-up emitter can carry roof water well clear of the house. On the Pelham flats a buried pipe mostly fills with groundwater, so we keep discharge above ground and route it to the part of the lot that drains.

Usually, if the old ones overflow when they are clean. A 6-inch trough carries noticeably more water than a 5-inch one and takes larger downspouts, and in a county where Debby dropped more than 12 inches, that margin gets used.
We decide run by run from roof area and pitch. A short porch run may need nothing more than a standard 6-inch trough, while a big main roof may call for 7-inch.
A metal micro-mesh guard, like the Rhino guards we fit, handles the whole mix. Pine needles are the hard part because they slip through coarse screens; broad magnolia leaves and sweetgum balls mostly sit on top of a fine mesh until wind or rain clears them.
