What the First Coast does to a gutter
Northeast Florida fits a lot into one metro area: beach towns on the barrier islands, old river neighborhoods in Jacksonville, fast-growing subdivisions in St. Johns County and small towns out toward the Okefenokee. Gutters on each of them fail for different reasons, so we look at the house before choosing a size or a metal.
Three things come up again and again. Summer rain arrives in short, heavy bursts. Salt rides the ocean wind well past the dunes. And much of the ground is so flat and wet that water dumped at the foot of a downspout has nowhere to go.

None of this is unusual on the Southeast coast. What stands out here is how much of it lands on the same house.

The big leaf drop comes in spring
On an oak-shaded street in Ortega or San Marco, the heaviest leaf fall arrives when the live oaks let go of last year’s leaves as the new ones open. Loose Spanish moss comes down with them.

Ten inches an hour
NOAA’s ten-year design storm here falls at 10.3 inches an hour for five minutes. Downspouts have to keep up with that, not with a drizzle.
Salt past the dunes
FEMA notes that salt spray speeds up corrosion of metal fasteners, with faster rusting measured as far as 5 to 10 miles inland.

What we see
Flat, soggy yards
USDA soil maps show most of the ground in Baker, Nassau and St. Johns counties as poorly drained, with the water table close to the surface for part of the year. A downspout that empties at the wall can leave water against the slab for days.
What we do
We check where the lot really drains before picking an outlet: a longer extension, a turn toward the street, or roof water piped underground to a spot that can take it. We call 811 to have buried lines marked first. More on buried downspout lines.

River and creek flooding
In 2017 Irma drove the St. Johns River at downtown Jacksonville to its highest level on record, and Black Creek at Middleburg set its own record. On low lots near the river and its creeks, a drain line can end under water in a storm.
What we do
Gutters will not hold back a river. What they can do is keep roof water from pooling at the foundation, so outlets go where the yard sits highest and no buried line ends in the corner the creek reaches first.

Salt on the islands
On Amelia Island, the Beaches and Anastasia Island, salt spray works on fasteners and hangers first. Copper draining onto aluminum speeds the damage up.

Historic districts
St. Augustine, Fernandina Beach and several Jacksonville neighborhoods review exterior work in their historic districts. St. Augustine’s own guidelines mention half-round gutters painted to look like aged copper.

Builder gutters on newer homes
More than half the homes in St. Johns County were built in 2000 or later, and the typical Nocatee home dates from 2015. Many still have the gutters the builder put up, and a few summers of storms show where they fall short.

Rain here is lopsided. Winter is dry, the leaf drop comes in spring, and June through September bring most of the year’s water.

Because the state line is close. We already work in Camden and Charlton counties, a few miles from the St. Marys River, and I-95, US 17 and US 1 all cross it into Nassau County.
The same National Weather Service office in Jacksonville forecasts both sides of the river, so the storms we size gutters for are the same storms.
Often, yes. St. Augustine asks for a Certificate of Appropriateness before most exterior work in its historic districts, and gutter and downspout details are part of that submission. Jacksonville and Fernandina Beach review work in their districts too.
We give you a written spec with the profile, size, metal and color, which is what the board wants to see. Check with the city before any work is booked.
Most houses start at 6-inch with 3x4 downspouts. A big roof plane, a valley emptying into one run, or a second-story wall above a porch roof often calls for 7-inch or more outlets. Our guide on what size gutters you need walks through how we decide.
For a sense of scale: NOAA’s ten-year design storm for Jacksonville drops rain at more than 10 inches an hour for five minutes.
That is the job they are made for. The fine metal mesh keeps oak leaves, loose moss and long slash-pine needles on top of the gutter, out of the downspouts.
Pollen and fine grit still settle on the mesh, so plan on a light rinse after the spring bloom.
Often, as long as the pipe can finish somewhere lower that drains. Where the water table sits near the surface for part of the year, a buried line can end up sitting in water, so we look at the ground first.
