Gutter cleaning and repair is one visit: gutters and downspouts cleared and flushed, a water test that finds leaks and low spots, and the fixes, such as resealing, re-pitching or new hangers, made once you have agreed them.
A visit starts at the top. Each trough is emptied by hand, then water goes into every outlet until it runs clear at the ground, because an elbow packed with straw will throw the water back over the gutter no matter how clean the trough is.
With the water running, the problems show themselves: a corner that drips, a stretch that holds a puddle, a hanger pulled out of the board. We will show you what we found and what it takes to fix, and the repair goes ahead on your say-so.
How often you need a visit depends on the trees over your roof. A seasonal cleaning schedule breaks it down for pine and oak cover.
Older gutters were often hung on spikes driven through the lip into the fascia. Years of summer heat and wet straw work them loose, and the gutter bellies out and holds water.
The run is lifted back to a steady fall toward its outlet and fixed on screw-in hidden hangers set closer together. If the board behind will not hold a screw, replacing rotted fascia boards comes first.
Mitered corners are sealed joints, and sealant that bakes on a sunny eave every summer eventually shrinks and lets go.
Old sealant is cut out, the joint is cleaned back to bare metal and resealed with gutter-grade sealant, or re-fastened where the miter itself has pulled apart.
End caps and drop outlets are the other sealed points on a gutter, and a failed bead there sends water down the fascia or the wall below.
Each cap and outlet is resealed, and a cracked or loose outlet is replaced so the downspout seats properly again.
Straps rust or pull out, elbows get clipped by mowers, and a loose downspout dumps its water right against the foundation.
Elbows and sections are refitted and screwed, and the downspout is strapped back plumb. If it empties too close to the house, we can talk about moving roof water away from the foundation.
Sectional gutters are joined every few feet with slip connectors and sealant, and every one of those joints is a place to leak.
Leaking seams are cleaned and resealed. When a run has more open seams than sound ones, one seamless length usually costs less over time than chasing drips.
There is no fixed calendar that fits every roof. The trees overhead decide, and the season adds its own load.

Yes. Guarded gutters need less attention, not none. We clear whatever has built up on the guard surface, make sure water still reaches the trough and flush the downspouts. Usually you cannot from the ground. A sag with sound wood behind it is a hanger problem, and re-hanging on hidden hangers fixes it. If fresh screws spin without biting, or a probe sinks into the board, the fascia is soft and has to be repaired before any hanger will hold. We check with a probe while we are up there.
Almost always a clog lower down, in the bottom elbow or where the downspout enters an underground line. Water backs up inside the downspout until it spills out at the top joint or the gutter outlet. Flushing from the top clears most of these; a clog inside a buried line may need to be cleared through its cleanout.
On a single-story house, with a sound ladder on firm, level ground and someone to hold it, plenty of homeowners do. Two-story eaves, steep roofs, soft or wet ground and anything near an overhead power line are where ladder falls happen. If any of those apply, it is a job worth handing over.
