Tattnall grows more than half of each year’s Vidalia onion crop and raises upward of 41 million broilers a year, and its buildings show it. Each type below sheds water its own way.
Width is only part of it. The shape of the trough and the downspouts behind it decide how much water a run can move. These are the four profiles we form for large roofs.

Every profile is formed on site from coil, and the right one is chosen at the estimate from the roof area each run drains. The reasoning is laid out in what size gutters you need.
A plain gable shop roof sends a whole side’s rain into one eave with nothing to break it up, and a 5-inch residential gutter cannot keep pace. We size those runs from the roof area, not the length of the wall: a 7-inch box or D profile, downspouts big enough for the volume, and an outlet at each end so no single corner takes it all.
Discharge gets the same thought. Water is turned away from slabs, drives and doorways and sent where the ground can take it, which on Tattnall land depends on the soil underneath.
USDA soil maps split Tattnall nearly in half: about 46 percent is well or excessively drained sandy upland, and about 45 percent is poorly or somewhat poorly drained. Where a downspout can send its water depends on which you are standing on.
Water dumped at a corner digs into loose sand and carries it away from the slab or the piers.
This ground drains well, so a buried downspout line to a lower daylight outlet or pop-up emitter works here.

Keep the water on the surface: extensions and splash blocks turned toward ground that falls away, with nothing buried to silt up.
Debby’s 7 to 11 inches in August 2024 collapsed road sections by Hodges Pond and Big Club House Pond. Concentrated roof water cuts into a yard the same way, on a smaller scale.
Spread the discharge over more outlets and aim each one at grass or gravel, never at a single low spot or a pond bank.
Tattnall covers about 481 square miles of the Lower Coastal Plain. The Altamaha forms its southern border, the Ohoopee drains most of the west before meeting the Altamaha at Big Hammock, 13 miles south of Reidsville, and the Canoochee drains the northeast.

The 1902 courthouse and the 1890s Alexander Hotel, now the welcome center, anchor downtown. Reidsville logged 6.93 inches during Debby in August 2024, rain that exposes any outlet too small for its roof.
Began as a depot on the Savannah and Montgomery Railroad, north of Reidsville. Irma put a tree on a house here in 2017, so after a storm, check the eaves under big trees for bends and pulled hangers.
Cobbtown, once called Quince, sits near the county’s northern tip; Manassas, home to 59 people in 2020, was named for turpentine maker Washington Manassas Foy. Idalia’s heavy rain closed roads across this northern half in 2023.
If a pecan shades your roof, you know the routine: leaves, catkins and husks in the trough, and brittle limbs when the wind gets up. Micro-mesh guards keep the litter out, and hidden hangers screwed into sound fascia hold a run far more firmly than old spike-and-ferrule fastening.
Helene’s worst orchard damage in September 2024 lay south and southwest of Reidsville, and yard trees came down with the orchard ones. After a blow like that, walk the eaves under your biggest trees and look for runs knocked out of pitch before the next heavy rain.

The same Rhino micro-mesh handles both. Pecans just leave more bulk on top of it: broad leaves, catkins and husks instead of fine needles. Much of it dries and blows off; what stays may need an occasional brush-off, and the downspouts still deserve a seasonal look.
Usually. If the fascia behind it is sound and the rest of the system is in good shape, we replace the bent runs and rehang anything that pulled loose. If the impact cracked the fascia or twisted a long run out of pitch, we show you what else needs doing before we quote.
Before August. At the Glennville NOAA station, August is by far the wettest month, averaging 7.48 inches against 3.33 in September, so clear the troughs and outlets by early summer. Under pecans or hardwoods, plan a second cleanout once the leaves are down in the fall.
