When Hurricane Helene crossed the county in September 2024, the National Weather Service reported roof and awning damage at many Hazlehurst businesses, and about 85 percent of residents lost power.
Storefront roofs and awnings often drain to one front edge, so a damaged gutter there drops water where customers walk. We rebuild that edge with a trough sized for the whole roof and send the downspouts away from the door.

Helene dropped trees onto homes all over the county; on US 221 one collapsed a home’s roof. A trunk on the eave crushes the gutter and rips its hangers out of the fascia.
We don’t do roofing, so the roof and framing are repaired first. Then we replace the crushed runs and split fascia, and check the other sides for hangers the impact loosened.
NOAA lists eight tornadoes in Jeff Davis County since 1950, none rated above F1 or EF1. The most recent, an EF1 on December 30, 2021, left an 11.7-mile track that crossed into Appling County. Wind like that peels back a loose end.
Hidden hangers are screwed through the back of the trough into solid wood at close spacing, end caps are sealed, and downspouts are strapped to the wall, so there is no loose edge to catch.
Hazlehurst averages about 13 days a year with an inch of rain or more. On those days a single 2x3-inch downspout at the far end of a long run backs water up and over the front lip.
On big roof sections we add outlets partway along the run and step up to 3x4-inch downspouts, so the water has more ways out of the trough.
The county grows cotton and peanuts alongside its timber, and all of it sits inside the Vidalia onion growing area. Long metal roofs on sheds and barns pour water onto the doorways where equipment rolls in.
7-inch box gutters with extra outlets, and downspouts led away from the doors and packed-dirt aprons, so machinery is not driving through standing water.
First called Handtown, then Milepost 8 on the railroad. Debby flooded a building in a known low spot here in 2024, so in-town downspouts are aimed at ground that drains, never back toward the slab.
The county’s other city, 189 people strong, southwest of Hazlehurst. Rural lots leave room for long downspout extensions, the simplest drainage fix there is.
A community on US 23 that grew from 421 people in 2010 to 487 in 2020. Newer houses may have builder gutters a size small; overflow at the valleys in hard rain is the sign.
First called Excelsior after its school, renamed for the Snipe family’s grocery around 1890. With farms and timber on every side, roofs here catch leaves and twigs from all directions.
The 1907 courthouse and the Pace House on East Coffee Street are both on the National Register. On older fronts near the square, rotted fascia often comes out first, and half-round can suit them better than K-style.
The Oconee and Ocmulgee meet on the county’s north edge to start the Altamaha, a river known for hardwood bottomlands. Where hardwoods hang over a roof, a micro-mesh guard keeps matted leaves out of the trough.
