Pierce grows pecans as well as pine. After Hurricane Helene, UGA Extension put the county’s loss of orchard trees more than 50 years old at about 60 percent, a year after Idalia hit the orchards. A pecan by the house sheds in rounds: catkins in spring, then leaves and husks from fall on.

Founded in 1858 as the county seat, it once lived on tobacco, and Georgia’s first brick tobacco warehouse, the Brantley Brick, went up here. On older houses near the National Register courthouse (1902) and depot (1917), we check the fascia before pricing gutters.
Named for sawmill owner William Paterson and incorporated in 1893, with 749 residents in 2020. Timber town then, pine country now: outlets here get checked for packed straw.
About 450 people, eleven miles northeast of Blackshear, served by the Offerman Big Creek Volunteer Fire Department. Country lots leave room for long extensions that land roof water far from the house.
Unincorporated, between Blackshear and Patterson, with its own volunteer fire department and community center. Where a septic drainfield lies beside the house, downspouts are routed away from it.
Ten miles north of Blackshear at GA 15/121 and GA 32, chartered as a town from 1914 to 1995. A barn or shed with a long roof plane may suit seamless box gutters.
Named for local judge Martin L. Mershon, it got its post office in 1886 and had 44 residents in 2020. Where a house draws on a private well, no downspout empties toward the wellhead.

On August 5, 2024, Tropical Storm Debby washed out College Avenue near Blackshear, cutting off about 200 residents of the Blue Lake subdivision. The Weather Service’s Pierce County report lists 7.51 inches at one observer’s gauge. At a house, the same happens in miniature wherever a downspout empties a whole roof onto one patch of sand.

Yes. Rhino micro-mesh stops catkins, leaves and husks at the surface, though a few husks may sit in the valleys until swept. If a falling limb struck the gutter during the storm, that run gets checked for bends first.

August is the wettest month at the NOAA station about five miles southwest of town, with 6.84 inches in a normal year, and about 15.6 days a year bring an inch of rain or more.

Give the water somewhere firm to land: fill the rut, then add a splash block or extension on level ground, or a buried line to an outlet below the house. If the gutter overflowed too, the outlet may be undersized.
Hidden hangers go through the trough into solid wood, set closer together at corners and on exposed walls. No gutter is storm-proof, but one fastened that way is far less likely to pull loose than spikes in soft boards.
Helene left trees and power lines down across the county in September 2024, and nine of the 16 tornadoes NOAA lists for Pierce since 1950 struck in December, January or February.
Keep clear of downed lines, then look for kinked troughs, runs tipped forward, pulled hangers and downspouts knocked apart at the elbows.
A fresh rut, a washed-out splash block or water at the slab means that outlet needs a new landing spot.
Storms strip needles, leaves and twigs into the trough all at once. Clear it before the next rain.
