In Downtown’s Landmark Historic District, named a National Historic Landmark district in 1966, and in the Victorian District, Savannah’s first streetcar suburb, half-round gutters with round downspouts are the period profile on many houses. Hurricane Matthew set the highest storm tide ever recorded at Fort Pulaski in 2016, and Irma’s surge in 2017 reached Tybee, Dutch Island and Burnside Island. Salt film eats cheap fasteners.
Aluminum or copper, never the two in contact, with fasteners rated for salt exposure. After a surge or a salt-spray storm, a fresh-water rinse and a hanger check are worth booking.
Savannah was once called the Forest City for its live oaks. Their small, leathery leaves pack flat in a trough, twigs lodge in the outlets, and strands of moss wrap around the hangers.
Rhino micro-mesh fitted over the trough keeps leaves, twigs and moss out of the water path, and the outlets and downspouts are cleared on the same visit.
June is the wettest month at the Savannah airport, and June through September brings about 46% of the year’s 48 inches. Debby put 6 to 12 inches on the county in August 2024. A builder-size trough spills over the front edge in rain like that.
Troughs sized to the roof area each run drains, 3x4 downspouts in place of 2x3, and extra outlets at valleys and on long runs.
The USDA’s Pooler soil series, typified here, is poorly drained with a seasonal water table 0 to 1 foot down, and 37.7% of the county’s mapped soil acreage holds water that close to the surface. A downspout emptied beside the slab has nowhere to soak in.
Discharge carried well clear of the foundation. We bury a line only where its outlet sits lower than the downspout; otherwise we fit extensions or plan surface discharge.

Some changes are decided by planning staff; others go to the Historic District Board of Review, which meets on the second Wednesday of each month. Ask early, and plan on keeping the profile the house was built with.
Queen Anne and Late Victorian houses with turrets, gables and deep porches. Every extra corner and valley needs an outlet, and downspouts have to reach the ground without crossing the porch.
A few antebellum-era houses and many from the mid-1900s (the median home dates from 1965), under the same live oaks and moss that line the avenue at Wormsloe. Guards and tired fascia are the usual conversation.
The Landings’ guidelines allow rain chains in place of downspouts, and new color schemes go to its review committee. We bring color samples and put the spec in writing for your application.
Salt spray from the beach and the marsh, and Irma’s surge hit Lewis Avenue hard. About 43% of island housing is seasonal, so book the cleaning and inspection while the house sits empty.
Matthew broke hundreds of oaks and pines on southern Wilmington, and a 2017 EF2 tornado damaged about 30 houses on its way to Fort Pulaski, some of them struck by trees or large limbs. After any limb strike, check hangers and pitch.

In December 2024, Metropolitan Planning Commission staff reviewed the in-kind replacement of copper leader heads and downspouts on a Bull Street building under the downtown historic district ordinance. The MPC’s historic preservation staff can tell you what your project needs; Gutter Solutions LLC is not the approving body.
What we can do is document the gutters on the house today, with the profile, size, metal and color, and form a matching run once you have the go-ahead.
Aluminum or copper. Neither depends on a paint film to survive salt air, provided the fasteners are rated for salt exposure and the two metals never meet: copper touching aluminum, or copper runoff landing in an aluminum trough, corrodes the aluminum.
On the most exposed elevations we also tighten the hanger spacing. After a storm surge or a heavy salt-spray blow, rinse the troughs and downspouts with fresh water.
Yes. Section 4.13 of The Landings’ 2022 Architectural Design and Development Guidelines says rain chains can be used as alternatives to downspouts. The same guidelines send new color schemes to the Architectural Review Committee, so check whether your gutter color needs its sign-off first.
We usually put a chain at an entry or patio outlet with a basin or drain beneath it, and keep closed downspouts on the outlets that carry the most roof.
Sometimes. A buried line has to fall steadily from the downspout to an outlet that sits lower, and on flat Pooler lots over poorly drained ground, which covers much of Chatham County, that fall is not always there.
We check the grade during the estimate. Where a line can drain, solid pipe goes to a pop-up emitter or a daylight outlet once Georgia 811 has marked the utilities. Where it cannot, we tell you so and plan extensions or surface discharge instead.
Start from the ground. Look for runs that sag or have pulled away, downspouts knocked apart at the elbows, troughs dented by falling limbs and fascia boards that have cracked. Helene left hundreds of Chatham County homes with at least minor damage in September 2024, 11 of them destroyed.
